Is there a drop in software engineer job openings and big-tech job-switching stats

If you don't know who Gergely Orosz is I really encourage you to take a look at his blog The Pragmatic Engineer and his newsletter.

He recently posed two good articles on the big-tech job-switching stats and whether is there a drop in software engineer job openings.

Among other data, one of the articles contains some research on the historical entries from the Who is Hiring? thread in Hacker News and the overall global results were like this:

So, yeah the slowdown is clear.

And this becomes an even more important question with the devs wondering about what will be the impact of tools like Chat GPT 4 on how the future of programming will look like.

But it's not all gloom and doom!

Being based in Europe, I've taken a look at what the job spectrum for software developers looks like here. And both France and Germany are up:

So, Vive la France and ... and not sure what the German equivalent for this is!? I hope something with beer šŸ»

Finally, another positive trend is that not all Big Tech companies have reduced the number of engineers. Actually, some of them, including Google, have increased the engineering headcount:
